　　春節踏著農歷12月24日零時的鐘聲，走入桂林的城鄉。這天是桂林人的“小年夜”，也就是“過小年”。過小年這天，人們宰狗、殺鴨，慶賀春節來臨。這天的爆竹聲，帶著人們送灶王爺“上天言好事”的心愿噼哩啪啦地炸響，聲傳高宇。人們認為灶神是一家之主，一家的善惡功過禍福都由它掌管，所以每年將盡，都要送灶神上天向玉帝奏明，為全家降福免災。祭灶的儀式多由家里的長輩去辦，他們將糖果放在灶頭祭祀灶神，祈求灶神“上天言好事，下凡降吉祥”。用糖果祭灶神，目的是讓糖“粘住”灶神的嘴巴，讓他甜甜的嘴巴盡說好話。除夕夜幕降臨后，再放爆竹接灶王爺下凡。這是桂林“過小年”的古俗，現在即便是鳴放鞭炮，也僅是古俗遺存的儀式罷了。
