Halloween originated as a celebration connected with evil spirits. Witches flying on broomsticks with ghosts, goblins and skeletons have all evolved as symbols of Halloween. Bats, owls and other nocturnal animals are also popular symbols of Halloween. They were originally feared because people believed that these creatures could communicate with the spirits of the dead.

Black cats are also symbols of Halloween and have religious origins as well. Black cats were considered to be reincarnated beings with the ability to divine the future. During the Middle Ages it was believed that witches could turn themselves into black cats. Thus when such a cat was seen, it was considered to be a witch in disguise. All these are popular trick-or-treat costumes and decorations for greeting cards and windows.

Black is one of the traditional Halloween colors, probably because Halloween festivals and traditions took place at night.

Pumpkins are also a symbol of Halloween. The pumpkin is an orange-colored squash, and orange has become the other traditional Halloween color. Carving pumpkins into jack- o'-lanterns is a Halloween custom also dating back to Ireland. A legend grew up about a man named Jack who was so stingy that he was not allowed into heaven when he died, because he was a miser. He couldn't enter hell either because he had played jokes on the devil. As a result, Jack had to walk on the earth with his lantern until Judgement Day. So Jack and his lantern became the symbol of a lost or damned soul. To scare these souls away on Halloween, the Irish people carved scary faces out of turnips, beets or potatoes representing "Jack of the Lantern," or Jack-o-lantern. When the Irish brought their customs to the United States, they carved faces on pumpkins because in the autumn they were more plentiful than turnips. Today jack-o-lanterns in the windows of a house on Halloween night let costumed cchildren know that there are goodies waiting if they knock and say "Trick or Treat!"

(I Still Remember That Halloween)

Days and days past, I’m not a child any longer. But I still remember that Halloween, 31st October 20xx. That was Saturday. I went to study English with an American girl named Debby as usual. We had 5 students altogether. Before that week, Debby had already told us to learn something about Halloween ourselves. On that day, Debby spent an hour describing this American festival for us, such as “trick or cheat”, pumpkin and even, she took a pumpkin with her. First she took out a finished pumpkin lantern. That was really beautiful and ugly, we liked it so much. Then she taught us how to make a pumpkin lantern by ourselves. We each held a small knife, learnt to cut and draw something on that pumpkin. Finally, we made it and put a short candle into it. That was truly happy. And the most surprising thing was that the lantern was a present for that day’s super student. Who will that be? My god! That was me! Do you know how excited I was then? I held it, jumping and shouting. That was the most unforgettable day to me. And I will not forget it, never!

Halloween is a western festival. It’s on Oct.31st. It’s a happy time for children because at night they put on the masks to attend the party. After the party, they knock at someone’s door and say: “trick or tread”. It means if you don’t give me the candies, I will play trick on you! At last kids can get enough candies for one year.

tiny ghost-like dolls hang from trees, big plastic spiders sit on rooftops and bloody plastic hands reach out from gravestones…are you ready for the scariest night of the year?

october 31 is halloween, one of the most popular festivals in the us, canada and britain. the festival began as a day to remember the dead. but nowadays it‘s all about the carnival atmosphere when people can enjoy dressing up and scaring each other.10月31日萬圣節前夜是美國、加拿大和英國最受的節日之一。

halloween is one of children‘s favourite nights of the year. they dress up as monsters and go to their neighbours‘houses. knocking on the door they shout: "trick or treat!" of course, usually people give them "treats" - a like sweets and chocolates. but, if you don‘t, you can expect a prank such as having your car windows soaped or your garbage cans turned over.

halloween is also a time for masquerade parties. witches fly in on broomsticks, while ghosts and skeletons chat on the dance floor.

you can even dress up as a famous monster like dracula! the motto is: "the scarier, the better."

even making halloween food should be like casting a spell or mixing a magic drink. in britain, people drink "witch‘s mix", made with apple, orange, grape and berry juice. children also enjoy "halloween worms," made from egg noodles. and how do you like the sound of "eye-balls"? don‘t worry, they‘re made with scoops of chocolate and vanilla ice cream, shaped like human eyes. skeleton-shaped cookies are equally popular.

a well-known halloween tradition is to make lanterns from pumpkins, called "jack-o-lanterns". first, the inside of the pumpkin is removed. then, a face is cut into the pumpkin, traditionally a smiling, devil face. finally a candle is placed inside, and the lantern is put at the front of the house to keep evil spirits away.

besides pumpkin cutting, "apple-bobbing" is another popular game. several apples are put floating in water in a big bucket. children have their hands tied behind their backs. they have to try to pick the apples out of the water using only their mouths. of course, people get very wet and it is very funny to watch.

halloween has always been a holiday filled with mystery, magic and superstition. it began as a celtic end-of-summer festival during which people felt especially close to deceased relatives and friends. for these friendly spirits, they set places at the dinner table, left treats on doorsteps and along the side of the road and lit candles to help loved ones find their way back to the spirit world.

today's halloween ghosts are often depicted as more fearsome and malevolent, and our customs and superstitions are scarier too. we avoid crossing paths with black cats, afraid that they might bring us bad luck. this idea has its roots in the middle ages, when many people believed that witches avoided detection by turning themselves into cats. we try not to walk under ladders for the same reason. this superstition may have come from the ancient egyptians, who believed that triangles were sacred; it also may have something to do with the fact that walking under a leaning ladder tends to be fairly unsafe. and around halloween, especially, we try to avoid breaking mirrors, stepping on cracks in the road or spilling salt.

but what about the halloween traditions and beliefs that today's trick-or-treaters have forgotten all about? many of these obsolete rituals focused on the future instead of the past and the living instead of the dead. in particular, many had to do with helping young women identify their future husbands and reassuring them that they would someday--with luck, by next halloween!--be married.

in 18th-century ireland, a matchmaking cook might bury a ring in her mashed potatoes on halloween night, hoping to bring true love to the diner who found it. in scotland, fortune-tellers recommended that an eligible young woman name a hazelnut for each of her suitors and then toss the nuts into the fireplace. the nut that burned to ashes rather than popping or exploding, the story went, represented the girl's future husband. (in some versions of this leg.

The other day was a foreign holiday - halloween. My English extracurricular class launched a Halloween night elf party, and I joined in with gusto.

To participate in this event, I need to put on exotic clothes. What do I want to wear?" My careful mother had prepared for me, a horrible vampire mask, a magic hat, and a black robe, forming the "me" of halloween". To the place, where the huge crowds of people, there is a classmate "transformed" into a plug in the wings, cute "little angel"; and students dressed as "black Wizard", some students even do a Halloween pumpkin.

The activity started and only heard someone screaming in front. I stood on tiptoe and looked forward. "Ah!"!" Look! What's in front? Is a frightening white zombie; he was wearing a white mask, wearing a black cloak, step by step, like a robot walking toward us this...... We quickly get out of a road, for fear of their own trouble. "Not good.""! "Zombie" was coming toward me, I stumbled and back again and again, but fell back, is a wall in front of me, I "ah ah"! At this time, even if I scream no one to save, as if my heart is going to jump out, I saw it made a leap of the posture, I hurried toward the wrong side, jump aside, it rushed to empty, I seize this godsend, immediately walk, I was a long sigh of relief!

The rest of the game is also very interesting, among them, the "bite" is my most love the game, I need to kneel on the ground, the head pressure to bite into the bucket, floating on the surface of the apple, when the mouth hit the apple, Apple will sink into the water inside, tried many times, however, to the last apple did not bite.

This activity made my after-school life more colorful and made me know the customs of foreigners for halloween.

When the harvest moon rises on October 31, little hobgoblins, spooky ghosts, ghoulish witches and gremlins — their young faces hidden behind grotesque masks — will go forth to frighten friends and neighbors and to threaten them with "Trick or Treat ".

Halloween (AII Hallows Eve) as the name implies, is a nighttime holiday, the one night in the year when the child's world turns to pure fantasy. Children take all the lead parts while parents and other adults play the supporting roles. Encouraged by teachers and merchants and the remembrance of the good time they had the earlier year, children (from 3 to 11 years old) start preparing their costumes and Halloween decorations weeks ahead. Although parents help the children very much prepare the costumes, on Halloween they must pretend to be frightened by the masked visions that suddenly appear. There will be little witches in long black dresses with tall-pointed hats and magic broomsticks to carry them over the rooftops — to a neighbor's house in the next block. Ghosts in sheets run with tell-tale sneakers and half socks showing; and terrible pirates with skull and cross-bones painted on their three-cornered hats. Some carry jack-o'-lanterns but all carry bags or UNICEF boxes marked "Trick or Treat", which fill up very fast.

Teenagers have their fun playing tricks that sometimes get rather rough. They throw eggs or tomatoes at passing motorists , mark up windows and windshields with hard-to-erase candle wax, roll pumpkins down long hills, carry away porch furniture and garbage can covers, engrave graffiti on fences, or do whatever bad things occur to them as they go around looking for ways to "let off steam". Police officers are alert but they only arrest those caught doing real damage. In most communities there are school dances or block parties to help redirect the energies of the youthful pranksters. Business firms offer prizes for the best costumes and recreation directors help plan the party.

Today is Halloween, we wear all kinds of masks, wear colorful clothes, go to school to participate in activities.

Arriving there, the foreign language teacher came in like a ghost. He was dressed in immaculate clothes, and his face was covered with white powder. The foreign language teacher came like a wild animal, scaring us around. Foreign language teacher saw us scared so, can not help but "ha ha" laugh. The foreign teacher also showed us the plates. As I watched it, the foreign teacher came up behind me and shouted, "ah!"......" I am scared pale.

In the afternoon, the foreign teacher introduced two people to us, one is Millie, she dressed up like a little witch. There is a white ratio, he dressed as a doctor. They took out a big bag of sugar, spilled it, and dropped the candy like raindrops. We rushed at the speed of lightning to grab the sugar.

Time flies, in the twinkling of an eye on the school, looking at the filled pocket, I thought: This Halloween can be really happy ah!
