　　Ladies and Gentlemen Id planned to speak to you tonight to report on thestate of the union but the events of earlier today have led me to change thoseplans. Today is a day for mourning and remembering. Nancy and I are pained tothe core by the tragedy of the shuttle Challenger. We know we share this painwith all of the people of our country. This is truly a national loss.

　　Nineteen years ago almost to the day we lost three astronauts in a terribleaccident on the ground. But weve never lost an astronaut in flight. Weve neverhad a tragedy like this.

　　And perhaps weve forgotten the courage it took for the crew of theshuttle. But they the Challenger Seven were aware of the dangers but overcamethem and did their jobs brilliantly. We mourn seven heroes: Michael Smith DickScobee Judith Resnik Ronald McNair Ellison Onizuka Gregory Jarvis and ChristaMcAuliffe.

　　We mourn their loss as a nation together.

　　For the families of the seven we cannot bear as you do the full impact ofthis tragedy. But we feel the loss and were thinking about you so very much.Your loved ones were daring and brave and they had that special grace thatspecial spirit that says "Give me a challenge and Ill meet it with joy." Theyhad a hunger to explore the universe and discover its truths. They wished toserve and they did. They served all of us.

　　Weve grown used to wonders in this century. Its hard to dazzle us. Butfor twenty-five years the United States space program has been doing just that.Weve grown used to the idea of space and perhaps we forget that weve only justbegun. Were still pioneers. 　　And I want to say something to the schoolchildren of America who werewatching the live coverage of the shuttles take-off. I know its hard tounderstand but sometimes painful things like this happen. For those of you who areblack -- considering the evidence evidently is that there were white people whowere responsible -- you can be filled with bitterness and with hatred and adesire for revenge.

　　We can move in that direction as a country in greater polarization -- blackpeople amongst blacks and white amongst whites filled with hatred toward oneanother. Or we can make an effort as Martin Luther King did to understand and tocomprehend and replace that violence that stain of bloodshed that has spreadacross our land with an effort to understand compassion and love.

　　For those of you who are black and are tempted to fill with -- be filledwith hatred and mistrust of the injustice of such an act against all whitepeople I would only say that I can also feel in my own heart the same kind offeeling. I had a member of my family killed but he was killed by a whiteman.

The truth is， however， we will lose more opportunities when we choose to take the "opportunity" fork at the crossroads. The other fork， ignored by us and defined as "fearful challenges"， offers much more chances for the walker in petition.

　　We have such an inclination in life to overestimate ourselves and hold a thoughtless attitude towards the negative outlook of things.

　　We believe in the old saying， "Opportunity knocks but just once，" so we always wele it and devote all our spirit and efforts to it. The most devout believer of this saying are the graduates. Why? There are quite a number of them who pay full attention to positions in big cities and are willing to flood into developed areas under any circumstances， even though there will be too much uncertainty for their choices. Innumerable cases go straight to the same miserable end: God seems to refuse to help too many of His worshipers.

　　In conclusion， to define the quuality of petition seems to be far from valuable sense， for no matter what a petition is， an opportunity or a challenge， it will create nutritious elements for our growth.
