　　好的英語是讀出來的！

　　學習任何語言都需要大量閱讀。學習英語也需要大量閱讀。英語學得好的人，一般說來，都讀過相當數量的書；反之，也只有讀得比較多的人，才能真正學好英語。這個道理雖然簡單，但不少學習英語的人卻未必明白。時下，很多人都熱衷于做題目，以為這是學習英語的正確途徑。結果做的練習冊一本又一本，試題集一套又一套，做得頭昏眼花，興趣全無，英語水平卻并沒有實質性提高。

　　學習英語的.確要做適當練習。但我認為，歸根結底，好的英語是“讀”出來的，不是做練習“做”出來的。“讀”出來的英語是地道的、自然的，因為使用者依持的是“語感”；“做”出來的英語往往流于生硬，因為使用者是依賴“語法規則”硬“做”的。

　　一談到閱讀，人們便不由自主地想到“苦讀”。如果把這兩個字理解成讀書需要花功夫，倒也有理。但如果認為閱讀一定是很苦的，很少有歡樂，那就大錯特錯了。然而，目前的很多英語學習者都視英語閱讀為苦事，常常是不得已而為之。教師讓學生讀點英語材料，就像給孩童吃中藥，需要捏著鼻子硬灌下去。自然效果也不會好。

　　閱讀英語應當輕松愉快，也可以輕松愉快。要做到這一點，閱讀材料的選擇是首要的。也就是說，要選擇生動、有趣、富有吸引力而又能啟發心智的材料（或書籍）。這類書具有以下幾個共同特點：一、可讀性很強，讓人立即產生閱讀的欲望，一旦上手，就放不下來了，不會感到學英語是沉重的負擔了。二、容易讀，不大會產生閱讀障礙。三、有助于擴大知識面，提高文化素養。

　　至于閱讀的方法，我主張一口氣讀下去，即便有個別單詞擋道，只要不影響整體內容的理解，就不必停下來查詞典，更沒有必要見到好句子停下來就抄。因為那樣會打斷思路，影響閱讀速度，甚至扼殺閱讀的興趣。不要以為讀完一本書沒有記下某個詞語或某個句子就是一無所得。閱讀的主要目的在于語言吸收上的“潛移默化”，在于獲得語感。閱讀需要“量”，沒有大量的語言“輸入”，是難以學好英語的。而我們國內的英語學習者恰恰語言輸入量太少，當然輸出量就更少。結果往往事倍功半。

　　好文共享---飄忽的浮云 Clouds

　　I've opened the curtain of my east window here above the computer, and I sit now in a holy theater before a sky-blue stage. A little cloud above the neighbor's trees resembles Jimmy Durante's nose for a while, then becomes amorphous as it slips on north. Other clouds follow, big and little and tiny on their march toward whereness. Wisps of them lead or droop because there must always be leading and drooping.

　　The trees seem to laugh at the clouds while yet reaching for them with swaying branches. Trees must think that they are real, rooted, somebody, and that perhaps the clouds are only tickled water which sometimes blocks their sun. But trees are clouds, too, of green leaves—clouds that only move a little. Trees grow and change and dissipate like their airborne cousins.

　　And what am I but a cloud of thoughts and feelings and aspirations? Don't I put out tentative mists here and there? Don't I occasionally appear to other people as a ridiculous shape of thoughts without my intending to? Don't I drift toward the north when I feel the breezes of love and the warmth of compassion?

　　If clouds are beings, and beings are clouds, are we not all well advised to drift, to feel the wind tucking us in here and plucking us out there? Are we such rock-hard bodily lumps as we imagine?

　　Drift, let me. Sing to the sky, will I. One in many, are we. Let us breathe the breeze and find therein our roots in the spirit.

　　I close the curtain now, feeling broader, fresher. The act is over. Applause is sweeping through the trees.

　　拉開了房間東邊電腦上方的窗簾，感覺自己仿佛身處一個神圣的劇場，天藍的舞臺展現在面前。有好一會兒，鄰居家樹叢上飄著一朵像杰米·杜蘭特那大鼻子形狀的云朵，但漸漸云朵就往北飄移，大鼻子也就散了狀。周圍的云，大的、小的、丁點兒的都隨之往不知什么地方飄走了。縷縷白云或前行，或散去，這最自然不過了。

　　樹梢隨風輕擺，像往上攀附云朵，也像在嘲笑云朵。樹肯定在想自己才是實實在在、穩穩扎根的.重量級人物，而云朵只不過是積聚的水珠，只會偶爾擋住太陽的光輝。其實樹也是一種云，是綠葉做的云，是不怎么動的云。樹會成長、變化、老去，就跟天空的浮云一樣。

　　我不也是一朵云嗎？一朵懷著種種想法、感受和抱負的云。我不是也到處作嘗試，制造一個個霧團嗎？我的那些異想天開不也常不經意地在人面前變成了一團奇形怪狀的云嗎？在感受到愛的微風和憐憫的溫暖時，我不也像一朵朝北暢快游走的浮云嗎？

　　若浮云如人，人亦如浮云，我們是否都應該飄，感受風的力量，讓我們一時扎根這里，一時又把我們拔起吹走？難道我們真的就如自己想像中的那樣穩如磐石嗎？

　　飄吧，讓我！向天高歌，我要。人海里的過客，我們是。就讓我們一起呼吸微風的氣息，在其中尋找我們精神的根。

　　合上窗簾，感覺心胸更開闊，頭腦更清晰。帷幕降下，樹叢間掌聲雷動。

　　language of music

　　A painter hangs his or her finished pictures on a wall, and everyone can see it. A composer writes a work, but no one can hear it until it is performed. Professional singers and players have great responsibilities, for the composer is utterly dependent on them. A student of music needs as long and as arduous a training to become a performer as a medical student needs to become a doctor. Most training is concerned with technique, for musicians have to have the muscular proficiency of an athlete or a ballet dancer. Singers practice breathing every day, as their vocal chords would be inadequate without controlled muscular support. String players practice moving the fingers of the left hand up and down, while drawing the bow to and fro with the right arm-two entirely different movements.

　　Singers and instruments have to be able to get every note perfectly in tune. Pianists are spared this particular anxiety, for the notes are already there, waiting for them, and it is the piano tuner’s responsibility to tune the instrument for them. But they have their own difficulties; the hammers that hit the string have to be coaxed not to sound like percussion, and each overlapping tone has to sound clear.

　　This problem of getting clear texture is one that confronts student conductors: they have to learn to know every note of the music and how it should sound, and they have to aim at controlling these sound with fanatical but selfless authority.

　　Technique is of no use unless it is combined with musical knowledge and understanding. Great artists are those who are so thoroughly at home in the language of music that they can enjoy performing works written in any century.
