漢代崔瑗《三子釵銘》中叫“元正”、晉代庾闡《揚(yáng)都賦》一賦中稱(chēng)作“元辰”、北齊時(shí)的《元會(huì)大享歌皇夏辭》一辭中呼為“元春”、唐德宗-李適《元日退朝觀軍仗歸營(yíng)》一詩(shī)中謂之“元朔”。
中國(guó)元旦歷來(lái)指的是夏歷（農(nóng)歷、陰歷）正月初一。正月初一的計(jì)算方法，在漢武帝時(shí)期以前也是很不統(tǒng)一的。因此，歷代的元旦月、日也并不一致。夏朝的夏歷以孟喜月（元月）為正月，商朝的殷歷以臘月（十二月）為正月，周朝的'周歷以冬月（十一月）為正月。秦始皇統(tǒng)一中國(guó)后，又以陽(yáng)春月（十月）為正月，即十月初一為元旦。
從漢武帝起，規(guī)定孟喜月（元月）為正月，把孟喜月的第一天（夏歷的正月初一）稱(chēng)為元旦，一直沿用到清朝末年。
公元1911年，孫中山領(lǐng)導(dǎo)的辛亥革命推翻了滿清的統(tǒng)治，建立了中華民國(guó)。各省都督代表在南京開(kāi)會(huì)決定使用公歷，把農(nóng)歷的1月1日叫做“春節(jié)”，把公歷的1月1日稱(chēng)為“元旦”，不過(guò)當(dāng)時(shí)并沒(méi)有正式公布。
