1. goal
1）目的，目標 achieve/reach/realize one’s goal實現目標；
2）（球戲等的）得分，贏分 make/score/get a goal 得一分
2. times 時代;時勢；境況（常用復）;
the times 當代
The times are different. 時代不同了。

3. apart
1）（指空間或時間）相隔，相距
The two houses stood 500 meters apart.

2）不在一起；分離； 分開

4. devote…to… v 獻身…的；專心于…的；專用于…的;
devote oneself to 獻身于；致力于
She devoted herself to fighting for therights for the blacks.
她致力于為黑人權利而戰的事業中。
Don’t devote too much time to games.
不要過度沉溺于游戲。
devoted adj 摯愛的；忠誠的；全心全意的
She devoted herself to her children. = She was devoted to her children.
5.cost 使喪失；使損失
That one mistake almost cost him his life.
The closure of the factory will cost 1,000 jobs.
The accident cost me a visit to the doctor.
Financial worries cost her many sleepless nights.
她為錢發愁，許多夜晚無法入睡。
6. rush vt. 急送；猛推
rush sb to the hospital 火速送某人去醫院
Ambulances rushed the injured to the hospital.
n. 急速 in a rush 匆忙地;
I can’t stop-I’m in a rush. 我不能停下來----我忙著呢。
7. adapt to;adapt oneself to…(使)適應
We have had to adapt quickly to the new changes.
It took him to adapt himself to his new surroundings.
We should adapt our thinking to the new conditions.
8. cheer 使振奮;使高興;歡呼
The good news cheered (up) everybody who heard it.
Cheer victory 為勝利而歡呼。
Everybody cheered (up) at the news. 大家聽了這個好消息都很振奮
Oh, come on –cheer up ! 哦，快點，振作起來！
9. spirit （常用復數形式）情緒
in high (good) spirits 情緒高漲；興高采烈
in low (poor) spirits 情緒低落；意志消沉
10. sympathy
have/feel/express sympathy for sb 對某人表示同情；同情某人
I wish he’d show me a little sympathy.
It is not enough to have sympathy for the disabled. We should learn to respect them and help them understand their valuable role in society.
11. inspire
vt. 吸(氣), 鼓舞, 感動, 激發, 啟示, 使生靈感, 產生
vi. 吸入, 賦予靈感
inspire sb. to do sth. 鼓勵某人干謀事
inspire sb. with sth. inspire sth. in sb. 用某物激勵某人
inspired adj. 被鼓舞的；受到靈感的。
His speech was inspiring to us. 我們被他的演說所激勵。
We ere inspired by his speech.. 他的演說令我們鼓舞。
inspiring adj. 鼓勵的；鼓舞的。
12. quit vi/ vt ( task 內短語) 離開，退出
quit office 離職 quit school 退學
We only just started. We’re not going to quit now.
He quit the show last year because of bad health.
I’ve quit smoking.
13. Sang Lan is very good example of someone who is happy with her life, even when people expect her to be sad. (P18) 桑蘭是享受生活的一個很好的例子，盡管人們認為她會悲傷。

1) to think or believe something will happen, or someone will arrive:
