Step 1 Revision

Check up the homework exercises (Listening in workbook).

First asks the students to read the answers and then check it up together.

Step 2 Pre-reading

T: Now please look at the screen. And discuss these questions with your partner. Then I’ll ask some students to report your work. Are you clear?

Step 3 While-reading

Get the students comprehend the passage quickly and accurately, and meanwhile help the students to form a good habit of reading.

“stand for” means “to be a sign or short form of, represent, mean”

e.g. The letters NBC stand for Natonal Broadcasing Company Inc.

2. The fact that Great Britain is made up of three coutries is still unknown to many.

“make the most of” means “put something to the best possible use”

e.g. He doesn’t do well because he doesn’t make the most of his ability.

e.g. We could see the ship lying off the harbor.

Step 4 Post-reading

Read the passage again and try to fill in the blanks. Work in groups.

The British Isles

consist of Two large islands: One is called Ireland and the other Britain

weather The climate of the British Isles is mild with a lot of rain.

culture The culture of people has received many influences from the European mainland, such as in English language you can find many French words.

history The United Kingdom has a long history. The first two countries forming the Union were England Wales in 1536. In 1707 Scotland is part of the United Kingdom.

language In modern times, people speak English throughout the British Isles. There are still people speak the older European languages.

The teacher checks the answers, then let students finish another group work: Imagine that you are going on a four week trip through the UK. Make a traveling plan in which you describe where you will go and what clothes and things you will take.
