II.詞義辨析

1. borrow / lend / keep

⑴ borrow: borrow sth. from sb.

May I borrow the history book from your sister?

⑵ lend: lend sth. to sb./lend sb sth

John lent me his new CD player yesterday.

⑶ keep

How long have you kept the book? For two weeks.

2. several / a little / a few / some / any

⑴ several: She has learnt several units by now.

⑵ a little: There is a little time left. Let’s clean the classroom first.

⑶ a few: A few days later, they found the lost boy.

⑷ some / any: There are some oranges on the plate.

There isn’t any bread in the bag.

Are there any apples on the table?

3. find / find out

⑴ find 發現

He found a wallet on way home and gave it to the police.

⑵ find out 找到

The teacher found out why he was late for school.

They find out a new method to work out the difficult math problem.

4. for / since

（1）謂語動詞必須是延續性動詞。

They have been here for ten minutes.

What have you done since 8 o’clock this morning?

（2）for 接表示一段時間的詞、短語，since 接表示時刻的詞、短語。

He has stayed there since 9 o’clock.

So he has stayed there for about eight hours.

（3）for 只能跟詞、短語， since既可跟詞、短語，又可接從句。

We have been good friends for five years.

We have been good friends since 1999.

We have been good friends since I came to this school.

（4）對for / since引導的時間狀語從句提問時用how long

--How long have you worked there?

--Since 1998.

5. as soon as possible；意為“盡可能早地，盡快”，多指時間短

Don’t worry. I’ll come as soon as possible.

（1）as quickly as possible；盡早（快），多指速度快

Please read the story as quickly as possible.

（2）as much as possible盡可能多地，多指數量。

We must practice peaking English as much as possible.

6. besides 除…以外，還有，包括后面的賓語

except；除…以外，不包括后面的賓語

except for有時可以與except互換

Besides English he is good at French.

We all pass the exam except Tom.

Except for my father ,we will all go boating.

7. because； because of 二者都作“因為”，“由于”解。

because作連詞，后跟句子，是主句的直接原因。

because of是復合介詞，后跟名詞或代詞，相當于名詞詞組。

He is not here today because he is ill.

The football match was put off because of the rain.

8. harm； hurt 均有“傷害”之意，但用法有區別。

harm使用較廣，暗示產生“不良后果”。

hurt表示“傷害”，暗示“肉體上的疼痛或精神上的不快”。

The noise of the machine harmed their hearing.

I’m sorry if I hurt your feelings.

9. search與look for

（1）search （sb./sth.）（for sb./sth.）搜查；細查以搜索某人；

search through sth. （for sth.）把……仔細搜索一遍。

The policeman searched him for drugs.

We searched through the drawers for the missing papers.

（2）look for 是尋找的意思，強調找的動作。

Are you still looking for a job?

10. pretty, beautiful, good-looking, handsome, beautiful意為“漂亮悅人的”，強調內在美和外在美的統一性，是表示“美麗”的最普通用語，語氣最強，不用于男性；

pretty只用于小孩、婦女和細小的東西，語氣較弱；

good-looking指相貌好看的，語氣弱，可修飾男性或女性；

handsome英俊的，瀟灑的，主要用于男性。

11. check與examine

兩詞都有“檢查，核對”的意思。

check（用檢查或調查的方法）印證某事，核對；核實（不用于被動語態）

examine仔細觀察；核查；調查；審查；診察，測試

examine強調檢查，測試，審問，而check強調在檢查的基礎上的印證，核對。

The doctor examined her patient carefully.

He must check his work more carefully. It’s full of mistakes.

12. happen, take place, chance

happen發生，碰巧，指偶然性；

chance（是正式用語）發生，偶然發生=happen；

take place 發生，常指經過安排的。

I happened/chanced to be there when the accident happened.

Where will the 2006 World Cup Football Match take place?

13. surprise 與amaze

surprise表示由于突然而“吃驚、驚訝”；

amaze表示造成心理上的混亂的吃驚，還表示“使驚嘆”，即對某種未料到的驚人之舉感嘆，贊佩，語氣比surprise強。

14. however與but

兩者作“但是，然而”解，而且都引出并列句。

從語義上看，but所表示的是非常明顯的對比，轉折的意味較however強。

從語法上看，but是個并列連詞，而however卻是個連接副詞。

從語序上看，but總是位于所引出來的分句之首，而however卻可位于句首，句中，句末，但是譯成漢語時一定要把它放在分句之首。

15. because與since, as, for

這四個連詞表示“因為，原因”的語氣由強至弱依次為because--since--as--for.其中because, since, as為從屬連詞。引導原因狀語從句；for是并列連詞，連接兩個并列句。

because意為“因為”，表示直接原因，回答why的提問，一般放在主句之后，可單獨存在。

since意為“因為，既然”，側重主句，從句表示顯然的或已知的理由。

as意為“由于，鑒于”，主從句并重，從句說明原因，主句說明結果，為常用詞。

for意為“因為，由于”，表明附加或推斷的理由，引導的分句前常有逗號，for分句不放在句首。

16. seem 與appear, as if

appear/seem意思是“顯得，好像，似乎”，都是不及物動詞。一般不用于進行時態，通常用于以下兩種句型：

It appeared/seemed that he’d made a mistake.

He appeared/seemed to have made a mistake.

as if 用來引導方式狀語從句，意思是“好像，似乎”，它跟在描述行為舉止的動詞的后面，常見的如：feel, seem, appear, smell， sound, taste等。

It seems / appears as if she’s lost interest in her job.

17. alike 與like

alike是以a起首的形容詞，只能做表語，而不能充當定語；而like卻可以做介詞或形容詞，

作形容詞的like既可以作表語，也可以作定語。

The twin brothers are very much alike.

The twin brothers is like that one very much.

注：alike也可用作副詞，意為“同樣地，相似地”。

She treats all the students alike.
