1.increase v.& n.(使……)增長(zhǎng)/加
Travel can increase our knowledge of the world.
旅行能加深我們對(duì)世界的了解。

這個(gè)學(xué)校的學(xué)生人數(shù)已增加到3000人。
The population of the area increased by 5% last year.

3.[辨析] alive/living/live/lively
四個(gè)詞都可用作形容詞，但具體含義與用法不同。
alive“活著的”，是表語(yǔ)形容詞，可修飾人、物；用作表語(yǔ)（可與living互換）、賓補(bǔ)和后置定語(yǔ)，不能用作前置定語(yǔ)。如；
The fish is still alive/living.那條魚還活著。
Keep him alive, please.請(qǐng)讓他活下去吧。
He is the only man alive in the accident.
他是事故中惟一活著的人。
living“有生命的，活著的”，多作表語(yǔ)和前置定語(yǔ)，可修飾人或物。如：
a living plant 活的植物
The living will go on with the work of the dead.活著的人將繼續(xù)死者的工作。
Live[laiv]“活生生的，現(xiàn)場(chǎng)直播的”，用作前置定語(yǔ)，保修飾物，不指人。
a live tiger 一只活老虎
a live show/broadcast/TV program
現(xiàn)場(chǎng)轉(zhuǎn)播的表演/實(shí)況廣播/現(xiàn)場(chǎng)直播的電視節(jié)目
lively“活潑的，生動(dòng)的”，可用作表語(yǔ)、定語(yǔ)，指人或物。如：
a lively child 活潑的孩子
a lively discription 生動(dòng)的描述
a way of making one’s classes lively 使課堂生動(dòng)的方法
4.[辨析] year by year/year after year
year by year(=every year)強(qiáng)調(diào)逐步轉(zhuǎn)變的過程，“逐年（變化）”。
They liked the cold wet weather there and their number increased year by year.
糜鹿喜歡那里涼爽濕潤(rùn)的氣候，因此它們的數(shù)量逐年增長(zhǎng)。
The population increasing year by year.
人口年復(fù)一年在增長(zhǎng)。
Year after year(=for years)強(qiáng)調(diào)“逐年不斷、重復(fù)，年年（重復(fù)）”。
Don’t plant the same crop in the same field year after year.
不要年年都在同一塊地里種同一種植物。
