Then what do you think they can tell / give us?

S: They can tell us what has happened at home and abroad. They can also give us pleasure.

T: Yes. In a word, newspapers are very important to everyone. There are various kinds of newspapers. Can you name some?

S: The People’s Daily, The Chinese Youth Daily, English Weekly, English Coaching Paper and so on.

3. Which part of the newspaper do you find most interesting?

T: (holding a copy of …) Hello, everyone. This is a copy of China Daily. It’s today’s paper. Now let’s have a look at the headlines and see what is happening in and outside China.

Good. You see. You already have the ability to read some important news from an English newspaper. Now I have got a question: Does anybody know how a newspaper is made? Does anyone know how all this news is collected and printed? Well, I think we can get the answer from the reading passage in this unit.

Questions:

1) What’s the “homework” for the reporters?

The so-called homework for reporters is to go to the newspaper’s known library to look up any information that they need.

2) Why is writing headlines in English more difficult than in Chinese?

Because the English letters are not of the same size. For example, in English the letter M is wider than the letter I, so editors must check that there is enough space for the headlines they have written.

3) What does an editor do?

An editor tells the journalists what they are going to write about and decides which will be the most important story.

4) What do journalists do?

A journalist interviews people, writes a report and checks information.

6. What is the chief editor’s work? What do the other editors do?

7. Why is writing headlines in English more difficult than in Chinese?

8. Why must all the people who work on a newspaper work quickly?

Answers:

1. The chief editor holds a meeting every morning. Because they discuss the main events of the day.

2. Reporters cover events. As soon as they know what to write about, they get down to work. They telephone people and fix a time for a face-to-face interview with them. Sometimes they do telephone interviews. They also go to library to check information.

3. Reporters go to the newspaper’s own library to look up any information that they need. This is so-called “doing one’s homework”.

4. I think a journalist must be learned, diligent and talkative. He must be able to work fast.

5. They decide which photographs are needed for the next day’s paper.

6. The chief editor decides which will be the most important story on the first page. Other editors read the stories which the reporters have written and make any necessary changes. They also write the headlines for each story.

7. Writing headlines in English is more difficult than in Chinese. For example, in English the letter M is wider than the letter I, so editors must check that there is enough space for the headlines they have written.
