Useful expressions
1. get down to 著手工作
get down to sth./doing sth. to是介詞：As soon as the reporters know what to write about, they get down to work. 記者們一旦要知道所報(bào)道的事件，就著手工作。You failed to pass the exam again. You really must get down to your studies. 你考試又不及格，你可真該認(rèn)真學(xué)習(xí)了。 There's not much time left. Let's get down to repairing the machine. 時(shí)間所剩不多了，讓我們開(kāi)始修理這臺(tái)機(jī)器吧。
2. take a photograph of 拍一張照片
I took a photograph of the Great Hall of the People.我拍了一張人民大會(huì)堂的照片。 have one's photo/picture taken 請(qǐng)別人幫自己拍照。如: I wish to have my photograph taken. 我想請(qǐng)人給我照一張相。
3. be popular with 很受…歡迎
Tom Hanks is very popular with many people.湯姆漢克斯受許多人的歡迎。Pop songs are very popular with the young. 流行歌曲受年輕人歡迎。
4. care for 照看；喜歡；想要
She cared for her father all through his long illness. I don't much care for his new clothes. Would you care for a drink?
5. as well 也
as well相當(dāng)于also, too 的意思，不過(guò) as well的位置一般在句末：I'm going to London and my sister's coming as well. 我要去倫敦，我妹妹也隨我一起去。許多時(shí)候 as well和may/might (just) 連用時(shí)，構(gòu)成 may/might (just) as well, 意思是：“不妨；還是...的好”： We may as well begin at once. = We'd better begin at once.
Sentence patterns
1. Checking information is very important. 核實(shí)情況非常重要。
句中 checking information 是動(dòng)名詞短語(yǔ)作主語(yǔ)，課文動(dòng)名詞短語(yǔ)作主語(yǔ)用的還有：Doing this can save a lot of time and money. 這樣做可以節(jié)省許多時(shí)間和金錢(qián)。 Doing this is more difficult in English than in Chinese. (根據(jù)上文，此句的意思為) 用英文寫(xiě)標(biāo)題要比用中文寫(xiě)難。Learning new words and useful expressions is very important for me
2. Finally, there is no more time left for adding new stories. 最后，沒(méi)有時(shí)間剩下來(lái)增加新的報(bào)道了。
There is (no)…left for sth./doing sth 是一個(gè)較固定的搭配，表示“還留下(沒(méi)留下)…來(lái)干某事” 。如：There is much money left for food. 還有很多買食物的錢(qián)。There is no room left for the piano in the room. 屋里沒(méi)有地方放這架鋼琴了。
Language tips
1. --- Zhou Lan, can I have a look at your copy of China Daily? --- Sure, go ahead.
--- 周蘭，我可以看看你這張《中國(guó)日?qǐng)?bào)》嗎？--- 當(dāng)然可以，看吧。
注意go ahead 在對(duì)話中的用法: --- Can I borrow your dictionary? --- Yes, go ahead. --- 我可以借用一下你的詞典嗎？ --- 可以，拿去吧。
2. I want to have a look at what's on this weekend. 我想看看這周末上演什么。
句中 What's on 是個(gè)名詞性從句,作 look at 的介詞賓語(yǔ)，屬賓語(yǔ)從句。其中 on 是副詞，在句中作表語(yǔ)，意思是“上演、演出”。如：Is there anything good on at Dahua Cinema tomorrow?
大華影院有什么好節(jié)目上演嗎？
3. They're said to be very good. 據(jù)說(shuō)他們很棒。
我們已學(xué)過(guò)It is said that …（據(jù)說(shuō)），本句中 They're said…是一個(gè)類似的結(jié)構(gòu), 也是據(jù)說(shuō)…，所不同的是前者It是形式主語(yǔ)，指代后面的that從句，而后者，是把所議論的人稱代詞直接做了主語(yǔ): You are said to have got a few tickets for football match, right? 據(jù)說(shuō)你弄到了幾張球票，是嗎？= It is said that you have got a few tickets for football match. He is said to be very good at English. 據(jù)說(shuō)他的英語(yǔ)很好。
4. Reporters are then sent to cover the events. 然后記者被派出去采訪報(bào)道這些事件。
cover 在新聞傳媒界有特定的含義，（指新聞?dòng)浾撸┎稍L、報(bào)道。如：I'm here to cover the conference. 我來(lái)這里采訪會(huì)議情況。Jack was sent to cover the Olympic Games a few days ago.
幾天前杰克被派去采訪奧運(yùn)會(huì)情況了。
5. They telephone people and fix a time for a face-to-face interview with them. 他們給有關(guān)的人打電話，約定面對(duì)面采訪的時(shí)間。
作定語(yǔ)用face-to-face如：We had a face-to-face argument. 我們進(jìn)行了面對(duì)面的爭(zhēng)論。
作狀語(yǔ)用face to face如：The two buildings stand face to face across the street.這兩座建筑物面對(duì)面臨街而立。 類似的表達(dá)還有：heart to heart (心貼心地)；shoulder to shoulder (肩并肩地)；
hand in hand （手拉手地）；arm in arm (臂挽臂地)
fix a time for sth 約定時(shí)間做某事，如：Let's fix a time for the meeting. 讓我們定個(gè)時(shí)間開(kāi)會(huì)吧。fix 在本句中意思是“安排”，如：Have you got anything fixed for the weekend? 周末你有安排了嗎？
6. They go to the newspaper's own library to look up any information that they need.
look up 指“查詢”。“查字典”的表達(dá)應(yīng)為look up the word in the dictionary如查火車的運(yùn)行時(shí)刻 Look up the times of the trains
7. All the people who work on a newspaper must be able to work fast. 所有從事報(bào)業(yè)工作的人員都必須能夠快速地進(jìn)行工作。
work on 意思是“從事...致力于...”的意思。如：Mr. Green is working on a new novel. 格林先生目前正在寫(xiě)一部新小說(shuō)。He worked hard on collecting money for the hungry people. 他為饑民們積極從事募捐籌款的工作。
8. They must find out the new information as quickly as possible. 他們必須盡快地查明情況。
短語(yǔ)find out 和find不同，著重于研究、分析后的發(fā)現(xiàn)，這樣的過(guò)程通常是頗費(fèi)周折的，所以 find out 比f(wàn)ind更費(fèi)心機(jī)，翻譯成中文是“了解，打聽(tīng)，弄清楚，打探”。如：We should find out how much the house would cost.我們一定要弄清楚真正的房?jī)r(jià)。We must find out the truth of the matter. 我們必須弄清楚事實(shí)真象。
9. Photographers return and the photos are quickly developed. 攝影記者回來(lái)了，他們很快地把照片沖洗好。
develop 是“洗照片”的意思，如：I'm going to have our holiday photos developed today. 今天我將把咱們度假的照片沖出來(lái)。Sorry, your photos haven't been developed yet. 對(duì)不起，你們的照片還沒(méi)有沖洗出來(lái)。
10. Other editors read the stories which the reporters have written and make any necessary changes. 其他的編輯審閱記者寫(xiě)好的報(bào)道，并作必要的修改。
make changes 意思是“作修改/變動(dòng)”：The teacher made some changes in his composition.老師在他的作文中作了一些修改。
11. People want to buy the latest newspaper; nobody wants to buy yesterday's.
the latest 是一個(gè)十分常見(jiàn)的短語(yǔ)，它的意思是“最近的，最新的”，如：the latest news；最新消息；the latest model 最新型號(hào)。late 還可以表示“上一屆，前一任”,如：the late government 上一屆政府。lately 副詞，意思是“近來(lái)”相當(dāng)于recently。如：I've not been feeling very well lately.
我最近身體欠佳。
12. There are reports on new plays, movies, books, new restaurants and so on.
report名詞，“有關(guān)…的報(bào)道”后用介詞 on，也可以用 about或of, 如：There are many reports on the earthquake from Taiwan.有許多關(guān)于臺(tái)灣地震的報(bào)道。report 作動(dòng)詞，表示“報(bào)道…方面的有關(guān)內(nèi)容”，也總是與介詞 on 連用。例如：He reported on the results of the conference. 他報(bào)道了大會(huì)的結(jié)果。
13. Every Saturday there is a section about things to do at the weekend and the TV programmes in the coming week. 每周六（它）還有一個(gè)欄目，介紹周末活動(dòng)和下周的電視節(jié)目。
和weekend 連用的介詞，根據(jù)不同的需要有 at, for,over 等。如：at weekend 在周末；go for a weekend 去度周末；stay with sb. over a weekend＝spend a weekend with sb. 與某人一起度周末 in the coming week 在即將到來(lái)的星期里。the coming Sunday/year/summer vacation 指“緊接著到來(lái)的...”，等于 next Sunday/ year/ summer vacation。
14. Besides, I enjoy learning about new things from politics to sports and music. 除此之外，我還喜歡了解從政治到體育和音樂(lè)方面的各種新事物。
這里besides是副詞, “除此之外”: I don't want to go to the cinema; besides, I'm feeling too tired. | My wife and I will be there and four of our friends besides. 下句中besides是介詞: No one writes to me besides you.
15. 本單元中還有一些重要的詞匯需要掌握：
①daily: n. The People’s Daily is China’s national daily. adj. He gets a daily wage. adv. Most newspapers appear daily.
②check: check a machine; check to see if everyone is here; --- Are all the windows shut? ---I'll just go and check.
③add: Do you want to add your name to the list? Add 6 and 6 to make 12.
④speed: n. The car is going at full speed. v. The weeks sped by and soon it was time to go back to school.
⑤suitable: We are hoping to find a suitable hotel. The house is not really suitable for a large family.
