Language points

1.a series of 表示“一系列的，一連串的；一套（叢書，郵票等）”。如：

a series of meetings 一系列的會議

television series 電視連續劇

a series of exams 一連串的考試

a series of school textbook 一套教科書

*series 是一個單復數相同的名詞, “a series of +名詞”作主語時，謂語要用單數形式，若“two series of+名詞”做主語，謂語用復數形式。

[聯想]表示“（偶然）遇見”還可以用以下形式表達：

run across meet with happen to meet

run into meet…by chance chance to meet

It was really unlucky that he met with an accident again.真倒霉他又出了一次事故。

[拓展]come across 還可以表示“想到，越過”等意。如：

He came suddenly across an idea.他突然有了主意。

⑵信仰，信奉

We believe in Marxism.我們信仰馬克思主義。

⑶贊成，認為… …是好的；認為有… …

They don’t believe in kindness to criminals.他們不贊成對罪犯仁慈。

I believe in plenty of fresh air and exercise.

我認為充足的新鮮空氣對鍛煉身體有好處。

I believe in keeping early hours. 我贊成早睡早起。

辨析: habit 與 custom

habit 指個體的習慣、習性；custom則多指國家、民族或集體的“風俗，習慣”。

I just can’t give up the habit of smoking. 我就是戒不掉吸煙的習慣。

If only 雖然是從屬連詞，但它引導的從句卻能單獨成句，而且表達完整的意思：要是… …該多好--一種不能實現或難以實現的愿望。它相當于 wish ，但語氣更強。句后用句號或感嘆號皆可。

⑴表示已經過去的不能實現的愿望，常含有后悔、惋惜之意。謂語動詞應使用had done形式。

If only I had taken his advice! 要是我聽從了他的建議就好了！

⑵表達現在不可能實現的愿望，謂語動詞用一般過去時。

If only I could swim! 我要是會游泳該多好啊！

⑶表達將來難以實現的愿望，謂語動詞用would/could+動詞原形或一般過去時。

If only she would help me! 要是他能幫我就好了！

[注]if only除以上用法外，它還相當于if,引導條件狀語從句。

If only he gets the job, it will make a great deal of difference.

辨析：if only 與 only if

if only多用語虛擬語氣;only if 多用語稱述語氣，only修飾if, 表示唯一的條件。

open up 意為“完全打開”，其中up表示動作行為的完全結束、徹底完成。再如：

use up 用完 eat up 吃光

burn up 燒光 end up 結束

it is + adj. +for sb. to do 側重說明某人做某事的動作或狀態的性質、情況不涉及人的品質。

it is +adj. +of sb. to do sth. 側重表明對某人做某時的評價，評價的側重點是人，描述不定式的行為者的性格品質。如：kind, good, nice, wise, clever, silly, wrong, right, careless, impolite, rude, naughty 等。
