Teaching Procedures:

Step I. Greeting

T: Good morning. class.

Ss: Good morning, teacher.

T: Sit down, please, First, Let' s have a free talk about autumn. Who ' d like to give your speech?

S1: I'll try. Autumn is my favorite season, It is the harvest time. People are busy getting in crops. You can see all kinds of fruit such as apples, pears, bananas, and grapes and so on. They are on sale in the market. Besides, the weather in autumn is neither hot nor cold. It' s the right time for travelling.

T: Very good. Now open your books. Let' s begin our lesson

Step II. Revision

1. Check the homework exercise (Ex. 2. Lesson 19.)

2. Go through checkpoint 5. Carefully with the Ss, First let them revise the ways of expressing purpose. Read the three sentences in the checkpoint. Then tell the Ss to make up sentences with the words given. using " to do " " in order to " or " so that "

Suggested answers:

1. The doctor is still remembered by all her old school friends.

2. All your questions will be answered by the guide.

3. The word can' t be found in an old dictionary.

Step III. Preparation for listening

[ Wb, Listening, Unit 5 ( P, 131) ]

T: Today we are going to listen to a passage about a farm in England. The farm belongs to Dick and Becky. They also have a tea - shop. People come to the tea - shop to drink tea and have lunch. Please read the words listed in Ex. 1. Then tick the words you hear on the tape, re you clear?

Ss: Yes.

T: OK, Let' s listen to the tape

Step IV. Listening

1. Play the tape for the first time, Then ask an individual student to say the words that he / she hears on the tape, Finally check the answers with the class.

Answers: cows, pigs - ducks, chickens, vegetables, food, eggs, milk, cakes

2. Play the tape again, Before this, teach the new word " muck " (Bb: muck = animal waste) and explain the sentence " Not all the food in the tea - shop is sold or eaten (Bb: Not all the food in the tea - shop is sold or eaten = some of the food in the tea - shop is sold or eaten.) Tell the Ss. Tell them to tick the right sentences after listening to the tape, If the Ss can' t understand the details, the teacher should play the tape for this sentence once again so that the Ss can understand the meaning of the passage. Finally the teacher may check the answers with the class.

3. Play the tape for the third time. Before this, the teacher should tell the Ss what the diagram means, Make sure the Ss know what to do. Then play the tape, Now and then the teacher may pause the tape for the Ss to write down the words they hear. Finally check the answers with the whole class.

4. Show the listening text on the screen for the Ss to check how much they hear on the tape

Listening Text:

Dick and Becky have a farm, a shop and a tea - shop in the west of England, They live on the farm, The shop is in a small town, eight kilometres away. The tea - shop is next to the tea - shop. On the farm they have four cows, six pigs, ducks and chickens, they grow their own fruit and vegetables, too, Their two children work on the farm when they are not at school.

The vegetables are taken to the shop. If they are not sold, they are used the next day in the tea – shop. Not all the food in the tea - shop is sold or eaten. So this is taken to the farm and given to the chickens or the pigs. The chickens are not in cages; they run all over the farm. The muck from the pigs is put on the garden to make the vegetables grow better. The eggs from the chickens are sold in the shop; Milk from the cows is also sold in the shop. " But we don' t make them ourselves, " Becky said, " We don' t have enough time,"

Dick and Becky also sell cakes in the shop.

Step V. Writing.

(SB, Lesson 20, Part 2. The Ss are required to write instructions for growing tomatoes,)

T: Look at the pictures. What is the woman doing? S: She is growing tomatoes.

T: Yes, Do you know how to grow tomatoes? Ss: No, we don' t.

T: Look at the pictures carefully. Each picture will tell you a process in growing tomatoes. You can use these words to describe them.

If you want to give instructions to someone who wants to grow tomatoes, you should begin like this: Put some soil in a box, --- Now work with your partner and tell each other how tomatoes are grown. Are you clear?
