In the story the author used many metaphors(隱喻)to describe the terrible flood. Study the following and try to tell what they really mean in the text.

Metaphor in the text The original(原始的) meaning The meaning in the text

The noise grew to a terrible roar. Roar is the noise that lions make. The noise made by the fast flowing water is very loud, and frightening, like a roaring lion.

She saw a wall of water that was quickly advancing towards her. A wall is strong and high, made of stones or earth, like the Great wall. The water looks like a strong and high wall.

The first was swallowed the garden. Swallowing means taking something in the mouth and then down it to the stomach. It disappears into the body. The was is sweeping like a broom. The movement makes people and trees fall down.

Tree after tree was cut down by the water. We cut things using a knife. The water is as sharp as a knife.

6. Cloze test

What an unforgettable day! At the moment Flora was so 1surprised at the big wall of water which was 2advancing quickly towards her in her garden that she couldn’t move. Jeff rushed to 3seize her arm and they ran together to the house. Before they got to the house, the waves 4swept them down twice. Jeff 5pulled up Flora with a lot of difficulty, 6holding onto a tree that grew against the wall. The water, which was cold as ice and 7flowed faster than a river, was above her knees. They looked into each other’s faces, 8frightened.

The chance of being 9rescued was narrow. They opened the door to the hall and got the chance to 10climb upstairs to the second floor. The water moved up like a sea. Flora started 11crying. The house would 12fall down!

They had to find the chimney because it would 13stand. Jeff looked out of the window. Tree after tree 14went down. The garden was completely 15destroyed, swept away by the wild water. A terrible noise went through the house. Before the whole house went down in the flood, they saw the chimney.

Extensive reading

The Great Fire of London started in the very early hours of 2 September 1666. In four days it destroyed more than three-quarters of the old city, where most of the houses were wooden and close together. One hundred thousand people became homeless, but only a few lost their lives.

The fire started on Sunday morning in the house of the King's baker(面包師)in Pudding Lane. The baker, with his wife and family, was able to get out through a window in the roof. A strong wind blew the fire from the bakery(面包房)into a small hotel next door. Then it spread quickly into Thames Street. That was the beginning.

By eight o'clock three hundred houses were on fire. On Monday nearly a kilometer of the city was burning along the River Thames. Tuesday was the worst day. The fire destroyed many well-known buildings, old St Paul's and the Guildhall among them.

Samuel Pepys, the famous writer, wrote about the fire. People threw their things into the river. Many poor people stayed in their houses until the last moment. Birds fell out of the air because of the heat.

The fire stopped only when the King finally ordered people to destroy hundreds of buildings in the path of the fire. With nothing left to burn, the fire became weak and finally died out.

After the fire, Christopher Wren, the architect(建筑師), wanted a city with wider streets and fine new houses of stone. In fact, the streets are still narrow; but he did build more than fifty churches, among them new St Paul's.

The fire caused great pain and loss, but after it London was a better place: a city for the future and not just of the past.
