定語從句在句中相當于一個形容詞，起定語的作用，修飾說明名詞、代詞或主語的全部內容。通常在被修飾的詞語（即先行詞）之后，由“關系詞”引導。定語從句的三種功能：1.連接功能：連接從句，引導一個定語從句

2.指代功能：指代先行詞

3.語法功能：在定語從句中充當句子成分

(定語從句中的關系詞分為關系代詞和關系副詞兩種)

語法關系詞指代：主語，賓語，定語，表語。指人：who， whom， whose，that。指物： which,that,

注: 關系代詞在句中充當主語、定語、賓語，因此定語從句中不能再出現關系代詞所替代的名詞或代詞。

1.關系代詞在從句中作主語時不能省略

① A plane is a machine which / that can fly . (作主語)

2. 關系代詞在句中作賓語時可省略

3. 關系代詞在從句中做定語

4. 關系代詞在句中作表語時可省略（只能用that）

定語從句中關系代詞與關系副詞的選擇

1.明確關系代詞，關系副詞在定語從句中的不同作用

關系代詞which , that , who在定語從句中作主語或在及物動詞或介詞后作賓語

關系副詞when , where, why在定語從句中作狀語，即定語從句中不缺主語、賓語，只缺時間、地點或原因狀語

2.分析句子結構，明確句法成分

關系詞在從句中作賓語還是作狀語，關鍵取決于從句中的謂語動詞。如果定語從句中謂語動詞是及物動詞，應觀察其后有無賓語。如果沒賓語，則應考慮使用能充當賓語的關系代詞which或that。如果句子中有賓語，就考慮關系副詞when或where等

關系副詞（when , where , why ）

1. When的用法（在定語從句中做時間狀語）

I still remember the day when I first came to Beijing .

We will never forget the happy time when we worked on the farm .

He came at a time when (at which ) we needed help .

2. where的用法（在定語從句中做地點狀語）

This is the house where we lived last year .

The factory where his father works is in the west of the city .

After living in Pairs for fifty years , he returned to the small town where he grew up as a child .

3. why的用法（在定語從句中做原因狀語）

There are several reasons why we can’t do that .

He couldn’t give the teacher a good reason why he was late for school .

Is this the reason why ( for which ) he refused our offer ?

The reason why ( for which ) she was ill is that she had eaten bad meat .

4. 比較
