Every year, March is the month for remembering Lei Feng by helping others. What are you going to do this year?

Ye Meina, a middle school student in Harbin, joined a teen volunteer group last year. The group did helpful things like cleaning the streets, taking care of the old and the disabled and helping to direct traffic. The first thing Ye did was to clean snow from the streets after a heavy snow. “Helping others really makes me happy (3),” Ye said.

There were about 100 middle school students in Ye’s group. They did all kinds of things to help others.

Ye Jing, another middle school student, has been looking after a disabled woman for two years. She started that before she joined the group. She did housework for the woman twice each month.

People in China remember the spirit of Lei Feng, but what is it? Do you have to join a group to be a part of it? Sun Maofang has a good answer. Sun, who lives in Beijing, is one of China’s famous Lei Feng Models, and he has been helping others for forty years.

“Always being ready to care for others is an important part of the spirit of Lei Feng. It is never out of date (4) ,” Sun said.

Sun also said you could even learn from Lei Feng by doing small things.

“Such as love your parents and teachers more; try to help your deskmate with his studies if you can.”
