　　開篇的“尋尋覓覓”反映詞人心中若有所失的精神狀態。環境孤寂，心情空虛，無可排遣寄托，就像有什么東西丟掉了一樣。這東西，可能是流亡以前的生活，可能是丈夫在世的愛情。這種心情，有點近似姜愛的所謂“人間別久不成悲”。這，就不能不使人產生一種“尋尋覓覓”的心思來。心中若有所失，要想抓住一點什么，結果卻什么也得不到，所得到的仍只是空虛，這才如夢初醒，感到“冷冷清清”。此既明指環境，也暗指心情，或者說，由環境而感染到心倩，由外而內。接著“凄凄慘慘戚戚”，則純屬內心感覺的描繪。由冷清的環境過渡到慘戚的心靈。開頭王句，由淺入深，文情并茂地描寫出女主人公寂苦無告的凄涼心境。“乍暖”兩句，本應說由于環境不佳，心情很壞，身體也就覺得難以適應。然而這里不說境之冷清，心之慘戚，而獨歸之于天氣之“乍暖還寒”。接下來，說借酒澆愁，言談酒不足以敵急風。其實，這仍是開頭三句的延伸。所謂情在詞外。“雁過也”三句，將上文含情未說之事略加點明。正是此時，一群征雁掠過高空，在急風、淡酒、愁緒難消的情景中，它們的摹然闖入，不是喜，卻是“傷心”。“舊時相識”在異鄉相逢，使得這種種情債匯集一起，就更增加了詞人的天涯淪落之感。
